The poorly known low-energy \u03b1-nucleus optical potential is a key parameter to estimate the rates of these reactions.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #000000;\">Purpose:<\/span> The \u03b1-nucleus optical potential can be tested by measuring the cross section\u00a0of \u03b1scattering as well as \u03b1-induced reactions. Low energy elastic \u03b1 scattering on <sup>144<\/sup>Sm has recently been measured with high precision. The aim of the present work was to complement that work by measuring the (\u03b1,n) cross sections\u00a0on <sup>144<\/sup>Sm at low energies. The experimental data shall be used to constrain the \u03b1-nucleus optical model potential. From this potential the <sup>144<\/sup>Sm(\u03b1,\u03b3)<sup>148<\/sup>Gd reaction rate can be derived with reduced uncertainties.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #000000;\">Method:<\/span> The <sup>144<\/sup>Sm(\u03b1,n)<sup>147<\/sup>Gd reaction was studied by bombarding Sm targets with \u03b1 beams provided by the cyclotron accelerator of Atomki. The cross section\u00a0was determined using the activation method. The \u03b3 radiation following the decay of the 147Gd reaction product was measured with a high-purity germanium (HPGe) detector. The experimental data are analyzed within the statistical model.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #000000;\">Results:<\/span> The cross section\u00a0was measured in the \u03b1-energy range between 13 and 20 MeV in 1 MeV steps, i.e., from close above the (\u03b1,n) threshold. The results were compared with statistical model calculations using various approaches and parametrizations for the \u03b1-nucleus optical potential, and excellent agreement was obtained for two recent potentials. However, these potentials cannot reproduce literature data for the <sup>144<\/sup>Sm(\u03b1,\u03b3)<sup>148<\/sup>Gd reaction with the same accuracy.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; text-decoration: underline;\">Conclusions<\/span>:<\/span> Constraints for the \u03b1-nucleus potential were derived from an analysis of the new <sup>144<\/sup>Sm(\u03b1,n)<sup>147<\/sup>Gd data and literature data for <sup>144<\/sup>Sm(\u03b1,\u03b3)<sup>148<\/sup>Gd.
